Uprise Outcomes for 2018

Although 1 in 5 employees will have a diagnosable mental illness in a given year, on average only 1 in 24 actually reach out for face-to-face counselling offered by traditional employee assistance programs. This means there is a 17% gap between employees with a mental health issue and those that access traditional employee assistance support.

Uprise is a mental health technology startup that aims to address this gap and reduce the costs related to untreated mental health conditions. In 2018, Uprise had 23.9% utilisation on average compared to 3% of traditional employee assistance programs due to better accessibility and flexibility for users.

Uprise is a digital platform that coordinates mental health care for employees. The system has four main components: a wellbeing check tool; digital programs; coaching and therapy (via phone or messaging). Uprise uses an evidence-based approach called Stepped Care that steps employees up to higher levels of support based on their needs.

Uprise measures outcomes quarterly reporting on the following outcomes in 2018 from 26 companies with between 100 - 2,200 employees with predominantly office-based workers across finance, insurance, healthcare and advertising industries.

Wellbeing, Stress and Sleep Quality

Uprise is focused on improving wellbeing and reducing stress for its users. Participation in the digital programs has consistently produced positive results across these indicators.

Wellbeing is measured via a Wellbeing Check that uses the quick and accurate World Health Organisation Scale to measure wellbeing. This questionnaire measures wellbeing as a score out of 100 relative to the population, offering employees a tangible insight into how their wellbeing is tracking. On average, wellbeing scores lifted from 42/100 (pre-program) to 62/100 (post program. Additionally, Uprise measures stress using the Stress Fitness Check finding stress levels to decrease by 26% from pre-program to post-program. This two-fold improvement represents an important shift for employees towards wellbeing that is thriving.

The improvement to wellbeing and stress was also accompanied by an improvement in reports of sleep quality by users. This was measured by users rating their sleep quality along a scale with 0 as their worst possible sleep and 10 as their best possible sleep. Psychological Capital

Psychological capital is the feeling of safety to take risks and have open conversations about ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes in the workplace. It is an important mediator between a supportive working climate and employee performance.

Uprise measures and aims to generate improvements in the Psychological Capital of users because it predicts a number of ROI outcomes for businesses. Psychological Capital has positive correlation with desired employee attitudes, behaviours and performance, and is a key factor in supporting effective organisational change.

Uprise measures Psychological Capital across 4 different indicators with the results for 2018 shown on average below:

·       Hope - Increased from 64% (Pre-Program) to 75% (Post-Program)

·       Optimism - Increased from 66% (Pre-Program) to 74% (Post-Program)

·       Resilience -  Increased from 72% (Pre-Program) to 78% (Post-Program)

·       Self-Efficacy - Increased from 67% (Pre-Program) to 78% (Post-Program)

Risk of a Current Mental Health Issue

Uprise measures the risk of developing a current mental health issue by assessing the wellbeing scores of users. At-risk for developing a mental health issue refers to low wellbeing scores that are correlated with an increased likelihood of depression or psychological distress.

As a result of completing the Uprise program, the proportion of employees at risk for developing a mental health issue shrunk from 27% (pre-program) to 4% (post-program). As a result the low risk group of employees grew to 79% of employees post-program..

Turnover Risk

The risk for turnover in a company threatens both instability and additional costs associated with hiring and re-training another employee. Excessive stress and a workplace environment that stigmatises mental illness can increase the number of employees considered at risk for turnover. For these employees, an early intervention employee assistance program is vital to identify those at risk and offer personalised training and support to boost their wellbeing before they are in crisis.

Uprise measures turnover risk by asking how many days in the last week did employees strongly consider leaving the company. It is estimated that only employees with high, very high or imminent risk are considered at risk of leaving the company. Employees at imminent risk for turnover reduced from 19% (pre-program) to 9% (post-program).
